Princess Anne Library

Virginia Beach Public Library
Virginia Beach, Virginia

This new 16,000 S.F. branch library is the first of a prototype design.  Scheduled to be built at multiple locations, the exterior design will be changed for each library to provide individual identity and to respond to each differing neighborhood.

The library service goal for these prototypes emphasizes providing features that reduce the staff workload for repetitive tasks thus freeing them to provide higher quality services directly to library users.  The staff are trained to roam to increase their availability.

Design features supportive of this concept include a drive-up service window, drive-up and walk-up book return chutes, an open floor plan and only one multi-function staff service desk.  Self or assisted checkout is available at this Help desk, as well as all other staff assistance.

The needs of many patrons can be met at the drive-up window where both reserve check-out service and 24/7 return chutes are available.

The meeting room is designed to double as a reading area thus increasing public seating capacity.  Large windows allow the staff to observe, but when a meeting needs privacy, vertical blinds can be drawn.

Other features include a special young adult teen zone, children’s story room, a computer lab, group study rooms, a community information kiosk and natural daylighting.
